Conference of European Churches conveys prayers and solidarity for Beirut

“It is with great sadness that we are following the news of explosions in Beirut. We are praying to God for consolation and recovery of all those affected,” said CEC General Secretary Dr Jørgen Skov Sørensen. “Our prayers and thoughts are with our brothers and sisters at the Middle East Council of Churches and with all Lebanese, who are bracing against this sudden calamity.”

“On behalf of our Member Churches we convey our deep solidarity,” he added.

On 4 August a large explosion occurred in the Lebanese capital Beirut, that has caused over 100 confirmed deaths and injured more than 4,000 people, according to recent media reports.

An investigation is underway to find the exact trigger for the explosion.

Dr Sørensen went on to say that “European churches have a deep historical and ecumenical relationship with churches in the Middle East.” “Therefore, we are profoundly pained to see the loss of life and destruction on such a large scale. We are praying with churches in the region, for families torn apart, for rescue teams and those in the front line responding to this crisis.”
