Chios: Celebration of the Feast of Hieromartyr Platon of Chios and the Clergy of Chios Who Suffered with Him

With ecclesiastical reverence and liturgical splendour, the memory of the glorious Hieromartyr Platon of Chios, Metropolitan of Chios, and those who suffered with him, was honoured over the two days of 2nd and 3rd May.

On Saturday afternoon, a supplicatory service was held in front of the dark prison where the Chian clergy and notables were held before their martyrdom, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Markos of Chios, in the presence of the Mayor of Chios, Mr I. Malafis, the Commander of the 96 ADTE Brigade, Brigadier Panagiotis Lympereas, representatives of local authorities, and faithful.

This was followed by a Great Hierarchical Vespers at the Church of Saint George in Vrontados, with the participation of many clergy and in the presence of the Member of Parliament for Chios, Mr Stavros Michailidis, the Deputy Mayor of Vrontados, Mr Panteloglou, and the faithful. During Vespers, His Eminence referred to the Resurrection of Christ following His Crucifixion, which signifies the resurrection of all humanity, and to the “resurrection” following the martyrdom of Saint Platon, namely the liberation of the people of Chios who had been enslaved through the centuries.

On Sunday morning, the Matins and the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy were celebrated at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Chios, in the presence of representatives of the authorities and the faithful. Drawing from the Gospel reading of the Paralytic, His Eminence spoke about the mystery of Baptism by water and the Spirit, the “baptism of tears” through repentance and confession, and the “baptism of blood” through martyrdom.

His Eminence emphasised that Saint Platon and the clergy of Chios who suffered with him were deemed worthy of all these, highlighting the spiritual greatness of their feast and calling upon contemporary Christians of Chios to imitate them whenever required.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the faithful and Sunday schools visited the Martyric Holy Monastery of Saint Minas and the Museum of the Massacre of Chios, “ΙΣΤΟΡΙΗΣ ΑΠΟΔΕΞΙΣ ΗΔΕ”
