Church of Greece’s Standing Holy Synod thanks Greek govt for support to charities’ civil employees
Members of the Church of Greece’s Standing Holy Synod on Tuesday, during a session chaired by the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, were informed that the Greek government has responded in the affirmative to a request for extraordinary state support towards ecclesiastical foundations’ civil employees.
The request by the Church of Greece comes amid the still ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in the country, which has resulted in restrictions on commerce, public assembly and non-essential movement in most parts of the country, with a major negative impact on the economy and charities’ finances. Additionally, most of the Church-affiliated non-profit foundations are self-financed, in large part from donations.
Nevertheless, most Church institutions have continued to provide charity, pastoral care, relief and educational programs, the latter via remote instruction.
Moreover, the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece reminded that not a single employee of any charitable Church of Greece-related institution or foundation has been made redundant during the pandemic.
On his part, His Beatitude and the member-hierarchs of the Holy Synod thanked the Greek government for the support and wished its members God’s blessing, and that they be bestowed strength and wisdom in successfully dealing with the pandemic.
