Cincture of the Theotokos a comfort to faithful in times of need; vanquisher of disease
The Cincture of the Theotokos, reverently safeguarded and venerated at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos, is the only Holy Relic from the Blessed Virgin Mary’s earthly life.
A feature is posted today on the pages of the Orthodoxia news agency on the Cincture, accompanied by rare photographs and excerpts from 1871, when the Holy Relic was conveyed to Constantinople by the then Ecumenical Patriarch to bless the flock and ward off a cholera epidemic.
The Holy Relic has on several occasions been conveyed from Mount Athos for veneration and the blessing of the faithful.
This was especially true during the centuries of dour Ottoman rule, when Vatopedi elders conveyed the Cincture of the Theotokos to bless and comfort Christians living under tyranny, and to deliver communities from the calamities of disease.
