Commemorative prayer in Karavas, Laconia, for the soldiers who lost their lives in 1972

On the morning of Monday, 1 December, following the festal celebration of Saint Theokletos in Kastori, Laconia, the officials proceeded to Karavas where, in an atmosphere of deep emotion, a memorial service was conducted by His Eminence Metropolitan Eustathios of Monemvasia and Sparta, at the monument of the twelve soldiers who lost their lives in 1972.

The tragedy occurred on the old Sparta–Megalopolis national highway, when a military vehicle of the K.E.E.M. (The Centre of Training and Supply of Transportation) veered off course. The soldiers were members of the military band and the honour guard that was to render honours on the feast day of Saint Theokletos in Kastori.

After the memorial service, an officer of K.E.E.M. delivered an address recounting the tragic accident and reading aloud the names of the fallen soldiers.

This was followed by the laying of a wreath by the Military Commander of Laconia, Brigadier Georgios Zorbás, a minute of silence, and the playing of the Greek National Anthem.
