Commission VP Schinas: ‘Orthodoxy is love and love is stronger than war’

European Commission’s Vice-President, Margaritis Schinas, paid an official visit to the semi-autonomous monastic community of Mount Athos over the weekend, at the head of a Commission delegation.
In his statements, Schinas underlined that “…Orthodoxy is love and love is stronger than war. He added that the war in Ukraine cannot be the measure of our modern age.

Schinas, a native of the northern city of Thessaloniki, noted that approximately 500 million euros of Community funds have been directed towards projects on Mount Athos to date, while emphasizing that this support will continue in the future.

Finally, he said the protection of the legal status of Mount Athos is also within the scope of primary European Law.
