Consecration of new Cathedral of the Archdiocesean District of Adelaide by Archbishop Makarios
Amid a period when official Turkey persists in targeting Christianity in the country and even abroad, as recently seen with the opening of a mosque in far-off Japan with the name “Hagia Sophia”, the greatest of all Basilicas of eastern Christendom, Orthodoxy continues to flourish around the world.
On Sunday, the Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Makarios, amid an atmosphere of spiritual joy and emotion, officiated at the consecration of the new Cathedral of the Archdiocesean District of Adelaide, which will be dedicated to the Hagia Sophia, Greek for Wisdom of God.
A large number of faithful attended the historic event for the Greek Orthodox Church on the island continent and for Hellenism in South Australia.
In his address, the Archbishop spoke over the need to acquire a new Cathedral in Adelaide, while he explained the reasons that inspired him to name the Church Hagia Sophia, “…so that every time we refer to this Church, we are transported to Constantinople and to our Patriarchate. Let us remember the great Hagia Sophia and our Patriarch, who guards the Gates of Thermopylae and enlightens the Orthodox Church with his life and his Patriarchal ministry”.
