Cutting of the Vasilopita at the Stavrodromi Community in Constantinople
On Saturday, 31 December 2022, New Year’s Eve, the cutting of the annual Vasilopita of the Great Community of Stavrodromi took place in the hall of The Holy Trinity soup kitchen. The Vasilopita was blessed and cut by the Hierarchical Proistamenos, His Eminence Metropolitan Andreas of Saranta Ekklisies. The traditional coin, ‘flouri’ was found by Mr. Giorgos Hagialoglou, a commissioner of the Community.
At the end of the cutting of the Vasilopita service, which was attended by His Grace Bishop Benjamin of Tralleon, the clergy of the community, the outgoing and incoming community commissioners, the workers and residents of the Community, His Eminence Metropolitan Andreas of Saranta Ekklisies addressed those present and, after giving an account of the events of the past year, he wished the new year to be fruitful and peaceful.
Finally, he thanked the outgoing commissioners for their contribution, while wishing strength to the young people who take on their new roles in the community. Metropolitan Andreas asked them to work as much as they can for the good of the Community and the Omogenia.
Afterwards, a group of young people sang traditional carols, as well as old songs of the city, accompanied by the guitar played by teacher Mr. Yiannis Kotsias of the Zappeion School.
After the end of the music, Metropolitan Andreas announced that on the eve of the Feast Day of Epiphany the priests of the Community will visit the houses of the faithful to sanctify them, thus bringing back the ancestral custom of blessing houses and businesses, a fact that delighted those present.
