Cypriot artifacts repatriated from the US

Two ancient Cypriot coins and part of a wall mural were turned over this week to the Republic of Cyprus, during a ceremony at the island republic’s embassy in Washington DC.
The artifacts were illegally imported to the United States seven years ago, according to the Cypriot antiquities department.

The two coins were found as a result of US homeland security investigations in Philadelphia, which began in 2016, while the fresco piece was discovered in a probe focusing on Austin, Texas in 2021. The latter artifact is a fragment of a fresco dating the 17th-18th century, and originating from an ecclesiastical monument on the eastern Mediterranean island.

Cypriot authorities thanked all of the American departments for their cooperation on the matter.
