Deadline for appeals related to first-round election process for new Archbishop of Cyprus expires today
A three-day deadline for the submission of appeals related to the recent election process for a new Archbishop of Cyprus expires today.

Any submitted appeals will be collected by a specific Archdiocese official and then be presented to members of the Church of Cyprus’ Holy Synod and the locum tenens of the vacant throne, the Metropolitan of Paphos, His Grace Georgios.

As predicted by opinion polls, a majority of votes cast in last Sunday’s election favored the Metropolitan of Limassol, His Grace Athanasios, who garnered 35.68 percent of the ballots.

His Grace Georgios was second with 18.39 percent, and the Metropolitan of Tamassos, His Grace Isaiah, came in third, with 18.1 percent of the vote.

Members of the Holy Synod will have a five-day period to review any appeals.

Afterwards, within three days, the Holy Synod will again convene to select the next Archbishop of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus from among the trio of hierarchs, a decision expected to come by the end of December.

The new Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus will replace Chrysostomos II, who reposed in the Lord early last month after a long bout with cancer.
