Developments still fluid over name of Archdiocese of Ohrid
Inter-Orthodox developments continued this month regarding the Archdiocese of Ohrid, which was restored to eucharistic communion by the Ecumenical Patriarchate last year, and subsequently recognized as a canonical Autocephalous Church by other Orthodox Churches, all in the wake of the historic decision by the Mother Church’s Sacred and Holy Synod.
Nevertheless, a standing question mark remains over the permanent name of the dominant Orthodox Church and faith in the Republic of North Macedonia, as the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in its decision, precluded the use of the name “Macedonia” or derivatives of the latter, in the official title of that Church.
At the same time, the Skopje-based Church continues to use the name “Macedonian Orthodox Church-Archdiocese of Ohrid”, even issuing a recent announcement towards this end.
The Republic of North Macedonia lies due north of the Greek province of Macedonia, the latter being the land that more closely approximates to the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, and which comprises more than half of geographical Macedonia.
