Divine Liturgy at Panagia Paramythia “Vlach Saray” in Constantinople
On Saturday, 21 January 2023, at the ruins of the Church of Our Lady of Paramythia “Vlach Saray” in Constantinople, the Holy Divine Liturgy was celebrated, officiated by the Chief Secretary of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Archimandrite Grigorios.
The members of the new Supervisory Committee were present for the Divine Liturgy, chaired by Mr. Lakis Vigas, Archon Hartofilax of the Great Church of Christ, along with believers from Constantinople. Recently, concerted efforts have been made to restore the historic church.
The Church of Panagia Paramythia, more widely known as “Vlach Saray”, took this name because in Fanari near The Metochion of the Holy Sepulchre, the whole area and the church as well, were once the property of the rulers of Wallachia (Vlachia) and their palaces, the “Sarai (Palaces) of Vlachia”, were built around there.
Gikes and Soutsoi and Kantakouzinos used to go to church there. Powerful people like Michael Kantakouzinos the “Seitanoglou”, who was a personal friend of the great Vizier Sokolis (1560-1575) and he had the monopoly of salt and that one day, when his fortunes changed, by order of Murat III, they hanged him at the great door of his palace, in Aghialos.
The history of the church is long and tragic, with successive destructions and restorations. Specifically, it burned down in 1640 and later, in 1729, it was again destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt in 1730 and miraculously survived another fire at the end of the 18th century. In the mid-19th century it was rebuilt, only to be completely destroyed, again by fire, in 1970.
