Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I expresses deep anguish over deadly rail accident in Greece; message by Archbishop Ieronymos
Condolences for the families of the victims and best wishes for the speedy of those injured poured in on Wednesday morning from around the world, in the wake of a deadly train collision in north-central Greece late Tuesday evening.
His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I expressed his deep anguish over the tragic rail accident near the Tempi Valley site, north of the city of Larissa.
The Primate of the Mother Church on Wednesday morning prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and for God to give strength to their families, as well as for the speedy recovery of the injured, while officiating at the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.
His All Holiness also spoke by phone with Greece’s president of the republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in the wake of the transportation disaster, expressing to her and to the pious Greek people His condolences and support of the Great Church of Christ.
On his part, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, noted that “…I cannot find words to describe my very deep pain and vast grief over this tragic accident, which has cost the lives of dozens of our fellow people, many of whom were young people.”
“I am personally, along with the Church, at the side of those in pain in these difficult hours,” the Primate of the Church of Greece added.
Earlier, Archbishop Ieronymos spoke by phone with the resident Metropolitan of Larissa and Tyrnavos, His Eminence Ieronymos.
