Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Holy Synod requested a list of five candidates for the post of new Archbishop of America

Sessions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Holy Synod continued for a second day on Friday, having already settled one of two major issues affecting the two most populous Greek Orthodox Archdioceses overseas, in America and Australia.

On Thursday, members of the Holy Synod unanimously elected the Bishop of Christoupoleos, His Grace Makarios, as the new Archbishop of Australia. At the same time, the Patriarchate’s hierarchs accepted the resignation of Archbishop of America, days after he announced he was stepping down from the ecclesiastical throne of the Greek Orthodox Church of America.

Just as importantly, the Holy Synod’s members, who are meeting in at the Patriarchate’s Phanar-district seat, requested from an archdiocese council of America a list of five candidates for the post of new Archbishop. The Holy Synod requested the list by this afternoon, ahead of Saturday’s final day of sessions.

The goal, according to reports, is to elect a new Archbishop of America on Saturday.
