Election of new Archbishop of Cyprus on Dec. 18
The locum tenens of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Metropolitan Georgios of Paphos, this week announced that the election of a new Archbishop of Nova Justiniana and Cyprus will be held on Sunday, Dec. 18.
Based on the new charter of the Church of Cyprus, which was approved and enacted in 2010, three eligible hierarchs of the Church will be the final trio of candidates for election to the throne – vacant since this month’s repose of Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II at the age of 81.
So far, six Metropolitans and one Bishop of the Church of Cyprus have expressed an interest in succeeding beloved Archbishop Chrysostomos II, namely, Athanasios of Limassol; Vassilios of Constantia and Ammohostos; Georgios of Paphos; Isaiah of Tamassos; Neofytos of Morphou; Chrysostomos of Kyrenia, and Bishop of Karpassias Christoforos.
In a related development with Cyprus, but on a dour note, today marks the bleak 39-year anniversary of the declaration of a pseudo-state in the occupied areas of the island republic – an illegal action engineered by official Turkey, whose troops continue to occupy one-third of the island.
The pseudo-state is not recognized by any country, except for the occupying power, Turkey.
Anti-occupation events took place on Tuesday throughout the free parts of the island.
