Encyclical issued by Holy Synod of Church of Greece entitled ‘On the Protection of Human Life and the Avoidance of Abortion’

An encyclical issued by the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece, entitled “On the Protection of Human Life and the Avoidance of Abortion”, was read today in all places of worship of the Archdiocese of Athens and all other Holy Metropolises in the country.
The encyclical followed a decision by members of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, during a convening of the body in early August.

The encyclical reads, among others:

“The feast (of the Dormition of the Theotokos), also brings to light the great truths about human identity and existence. Human life … begins with the miracle of conception…that is, from the moment that the material body begins to growth. The fetus is a perfect human being in identity, evolving and developing during pregnancy in the mother’s womb, anticipating birth, and in order to continue growth through its biological course, and after a biological death, to pass into eternal Life, anticipating the Resurrection.”
