Events mark Pontian Genocide

Somber events marking the 100-year anniversary of the Pontian Genocide are taking place this weekend throughout Greece.

The Pontian Greeks, with a recorded history of more than two millennia in the south and southeastern shores of the Black Sea, suffered mass killings and violence by the Ottoman Turks and the subsequent Kemalist forces during WWI and up until 1922, when the remaining communities were forced to flee their ancient homelands.

More than 350,000 people died, with May 19 picked as the symbolic day in remembrance of the victims and their unforgotten ancestral lands.
