EXCLUSIVE – Elder Metropolitan of Peristeri Chrysostomos passes away
Born Chrysostomos Zafiris in 1935 in the northwest Greek city of Arta, he graduated from the Halki School of Theology in 1960.
The elder Metropolitan had stepped down from the throne last May, citing health reasons.
He was ordained as a deacon in 1960, as a Presbyter Father in 1970, and was elected as the Metropolitan of Peristeri in 1977.
Chrysostomos also served in significant ecclesiastical posts in representing the Autocephalus Orthodox Church of Greece, including as head of the Church’s Interorthodox Centre until 1999, and as a member of the board of the World Council of Churches and the Conference of European Churches.
