Feast Day of St. Paisios of Mt. Athos today

The Church today, July 12, commemorates the Feast Day of St. Paisios of Mount Athos. The Venerable Elder Paisios was canonized in 2015 by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Born Arsenios Eznepidis in the township of Pharasa in Cappadocia, in south-central Anatolia, he arrived with his family to the mountainous northwest town of Konitsa in 1924 after the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey — where he grew up until his teen years, and later apprenticed as a carpenter, Christ’s occupation.
A young Arsenios arrived at the remote semi-autonomous monastic community of Mount Athos in 1950, and after a period of four years as a novice, was tonsured a Rassophore, or Robe-bearer monk, in March 1954.

During his lifetime, Paisios was a renowned Orthodox ascetic, distinguished for spiritual guidance in Greece and abroad.
