General Covid-19-related lockdown in Greece for next three weeks

A general lockdown throughout Greece will come into effect as of Saturday morning and until Nov. 30, part of urgent measures to prevent exposure to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic has surged over the past two months in the east Mediterranean country, after a summer period of low confirmed infections and related fatalities.

All but necessary movement in public will be allowed, such as taking children to primary school, while a good portion of the retail sector will be closed.

The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece is waiting to see the exact details of the new lockdown measures, with members of the Church’s Holy Synod convening for a third and last day on Friday. Nevertheless, if reports are confirmed, churches and chapels will remain closed for worshippers during the next three-week period, with services and sacraments to be conducted only with clerics, deacons and cantors present.
