Great feast day of St. Paraskevi, Righteous Martyr of Rome; solemn religious services around Greece
The Church today venerates the memory of Paraskevi the Righteous Martyr of Rome. Today is also the feast day of Hermolaos the Holy Martyr & his Companions.
A litany of the Holy Icon of the Virgin-Martyr St. Paraskevi was held on Monday afternoon around the dedicated Cathedral to the saint in the same-name Athens area municipality, with the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Metropolitan of Prikonissos, His Eminence Joseph, officiating.
Busy Mesogion Avenue in front of the cathedral was closed off for the litany, which was attended by hundreds of faithful and pilgrims from around the world.
On the occasion of the great feast day, the Metropolitan of Piraeus, His Eminence Seraphim, referred to St. Paraskevi as a “…angel of the Evangelical message amid a world of idolatry,” during his sermon while officiating at the festal Vespers at the celebrating cathedral in the Kallipoli district of the port city.
In northern Greece, the Metropolitan of Veria, Naoussa and Kampanias, His Eminence Panteleimon, on Monday afternoon officiated at the Vespers and preached the Gospel at the Cathedral of St. Paraskevi, in the city of Veria, on the eve of the great feast day.
Among others, His Eminence noted that “…those who want to duly honor the saints should attempt to imitate their lives and virtues.”
In the greater northwest Athens district of Nea Ionia, a con-celebratory Archieratical Vespers, in solemn memory of the saint, was officiated on Monday by the resident Metropolitan of Nea Ionia, Philadelphia & Halkidona, His Eminence Gabriel, at a dedicated chapel honoring the saint, in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral.
To the south, the memory of St. Paraskevi the Martyr was honored by the Society of the Blind in Argolida prefecture, with an Artoklasia service, which is known as the Blessing of the Five Loaves.
The service was held in the historic old quarter of the city of Nafplio.
A festal Vespers was held on the eve of the feast day at the Cathedral of the Panaghia, in the center of Nafplio, while on Tuesday morning an Orthros and Divine Liturgy were celebrated at the Chapel of St. Paraskevi.
