Greek govt attempts to defuse situation on Lesvos, Hios
An urgent meeting by top Greek government officials, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was held on Tuesday evening to deal with the latest and worrying developments on the eastern Aegean islands of Lesvos and Hios.
The government decided to recall extra riot police units sent to the islands to safeguard the construction of new closed migrant/refugee camps.
Additionally, the government called on local municipal and regional government officials to meet in Athens in order to find ways to defuse the explosive situation.
Large segments of residents on the two islands oppose the prospect of more camps to replace the already overcrowded “hotspots”.
