Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Participation in UN General Assembly High-Level Week

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, through its Department of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations, has been active at the United Nations since 1979 and was accredited through the United Nations Economic and Social Council (“ECOSOC”) General Consultative Status in 1985. In 2021, the Archdiocese received additional accreditation through the United Nations Environment Programme. The mission of this ministry is to be a voice for the voiceless, an advocate for the oppressed, and an avenue for peace.

On the margins of the 2023 UN General Assembly High-Level Week, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese – in partnership with the World Council of Churches, World Vision, Act Alliance, among others – participated in an ecumenical prayer service for children and young people this morning, Monday, September 18th. This service prayed for wisdom and discernment as Heads of State, Ministers and Senior Representatives of Member States, UN Agencies and other key stakeholders make critical decisions affecting girls and boys across the world.

Also, today, the Trilateral Partnership of Regional Faith-based Networks for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) will be holding a high-level meeting on “Inspiring Faith, Hope, and Transformative Action to Accelerate Progress Towards the SDGs.” Hannah Williams, Coordinator of Programs for the Department of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical & Interfaith Relations, will be attending the event and participating in a panel discussion focused on faith-based organization transformative actions for SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 13 (Climate Action).

Later in the week, and in parallel to the UN Climate Ambition Summit, on Wednesday, September 20th, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese is co-sponsoring a two-part event with the Episcopal Church entitled, “Taking Stock of our Ambition: Faith-based Climate Action at the United Nations.” The Rev. Nicolas Kazarian will be participating in a multifaith worship service with other faith-based climate actors to pray for world leaders and concrete outcomes during the United Nations General Assembly and High-Level Summits happening nearby.
