Greek Parliament passes bill with provision resolving decades-old issue involving clerical spots in Dodecanese

A majority of deputies in Greece’s 300-member parliament on Thursday evening ratified a draft law that includes a provision for the filling of vacant spots for Orthodox clerics in the country – a development that resolves an open issue between Church and state dating to 1945.
The specific provisions, passed by 189 deputies, deal with vacancies in the parishes of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the Dodecanese islands.

According to Education and Religious Affairs Minister Niki Kerameos, who spoke during debate in Parliament, the bill does not foresee new appointments, but is rather a legislative remedy to a decades-old problem.
