Handful of world’s foremost tourist destinations on list of most dangerous places for Christians

Christians in some of the world’s most popular tourism destinations face harassment and even state-sanctioned persecution, according to the NGO Opendoors-usa, which annually compiles its “World Watch List” of the most intimidating and dangerous countries for Christian faithful.

The group’s list and extensive country-by-country reports come days after this year’s presentation of the US State Department’s report on religious freedom around the world.

Countries considered as tourism “heavyweights”, such as Turkey and the Indian Ocean island chain of Maldives, are on the list, along with Indonesia and Tunisia. All four nations are predominately Muslim, with varying degrees of harassment of autochthonous Christians along with intimidation and threats against Christian missionary work. In another country, the fabulously rich state-let of Brunei, on the large island of Borneo, in the Pacific, even a visitor faces the prospect of nine years in prison for possession of a Bible.
