Holy Diocese of Chora: 50th Year Anniversary Dinner of the Parish of Saint Dimitrios, Moonee Ponds
On Saturday, 24 May 2025, the official anniversary event for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Parish of Saint Dimitrios in the suburb of Moonee Ponds in Melbourne was held with ecclesiastical splendour and in an atmosphere of great emotion.
Representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Evmenios of Chora, conveyed to the faithful the paternal blessings, love and prayers of their Shepherd, emphasising that this anniversary is not simply a milestone, but an opportunity to renew the spiritual journey of the parish.
In his speech, His Grace pointed out: “This parish is not just a building of stone and wood. It is the fruit of the tears, hopes and struggles of our first immigrants… After 50 years of stability, it is time to raise the bar – to dare, to envision, to shape the new generation and to secure the future of our Church.”
Special mention was made to the clergy who served the parish over the years – Georgios Gritzotis, Efstathios Ioannou, Pavlos Laios, Dimitrios Papakyriakopoulos, Panagiotis Stylianopoulos, Emmanuel Lykopandis, Dionysios Rallis – and all those others who offered spiritually to the faithful.
Also present at the event was His Eminence Metropolitan Ezekiel of Dervis, who was a decisive spiritual figure during the early years of the establishment and development of the parish. His presence added prestige and historical depth to the celebration.
In closing, His Grace repeated the words of Saint Paisios: “God does not bless comfort. He blesses struggle,” and pointed out: “Let us not become a parish of survival, but a parish of Resurrection; not only preserving the past, but boldly proclaiming the call of Christ in the present and the future.”
