Holy Diocese of Perth: Commemoration for the Battle of Crete and Pontian Genocide

On Sunday the 18th of May 2025, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia the Holy Diocese of Perth held its annual commemoration for the Battle of Crete in WWII and the Pontian Genocide in Asia Minor during WWI.

The commemoration began with a memorial service held at the Church of Sts Constantine and Helene. Present for the service was the Consul for Greece in Perth, Ms Eleni Georgopoulou, as well as representatives from the Hellenic Community of WA, the Pontian Brotherhood of WA, the Cretan Brotherhood of WA, staff and students of St Andrew’s Grammar and the Greek Language and Culture Institute of Evangelismos.

At the conclusion of the service, children from the Pontian Brotherhood and St Andrew’s Grammar recited poems in honour of these two important events in modern Greek history. The Consul for Greece also addressed the faithful who were gathered in the Church.

Following the conclusion of the memorial service in the Church, an official wreath laying service was held at the new Battle of Crete memorial in King’s Park, in the presence of His Excellency the Honourable Christopher John Dawson AC APM – Governor of WA. At King’s Park, a Trisagion Service was conducted by the Reverend Fathers of the Diocese of Perth, in addition to the laying of wreaths, presentations by children of St Andrew’s Grammar and the Greek Language and Culture Institute of Evangelismos, addresses by the Consul and Governor, and concluded with the singing of the national anthems.

At the completion of the official wreath laying ceremony, an official luncheon was held by the Greek Australian RSL. The GARSL in particular extended heart felt gratitude to His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, who in His role as Patron of the Battle of Crete Memorial Committee, played a significant role in the erection and funding of the new Battle of Crete memorial in King’s Park.

The blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Perth (who is currently overseas) were conveyed to all the faithful participating in this important annual commemoration.
