The Holy Flame was again transported to Greece this week, even amid strict restrictions due to the coronavirus, arriving at the Athens International Airport aboard a special charter flight by Aegean Airlines, and personally conveyed by the Exarch of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Athens, the Very Reverend Archimandrite Damianos.

The annual tradition comes on Holy and Great Saturday, with the Holy Flame then distributed to every corner of Greece for the iconic Resurrection Easter service.

On behalf of the Greek state, the Holy Flame was received by Deputy FM Costas Vlassis, and by the Metropolitan of Mesogea and Lavreotiki, His Eminence Nikolaos, in whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction the the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport lies.

A military honor guard received the Holy Flame with head of state honors.

A procession of vehicles then conveyed the Holy Flame, or Holy Light, to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher’s glebe in the Plaka district of central Athens, beneath the north side of the Acropolis.

In breaking with decades-old tradition, the Holy Flame will not be distributed this year, a very negative result of the pandemic.
