Holy Synod of Bulgarian Patriarchate examines epistles by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Patriarch of Serbia Porfirije regarding eucharistic communion with Archbishopric of Ohrid

Developments continue in the Orthodox world after last month’s decision by the Sacred and Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to resume eucharistic communion with the Archbishopric of Ohrid, in tandem with returning the latter to canonical status.
The decision ended 55 years of schism between Eastern Orthodox Patriarchates and Churches with the once breakaway Orthodox Church in the Republic of North Macedonia.

The Archbishopric of Ohrid now enjoys canonical status within the boundaries of the latter country, a land-locked state in the southern Balkans that lies due north of the Greek province of Macedonia, the area that approximates to historical Macedonia of antiquity and covers more than half of geographical Macedonia.

Specifically on Tuesday from Sofia, members of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church examined epistles conveyed by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, and the Patriarch of Serbia, His Holiness Porfirije, regarding resumed eucharistic communion with the Archbishopric of Ohrid.

In a statement, the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Church announced that: “… The Bulgarian Patriarchate welcomes decisions for overcoming the schism and enters into canonical and eucharistic communion with the Orthodox Church of North Macedonia.”

However, the statement uses a derivative of the name “Macedonia”, something that the Ecumenical Patriarchate has explicitly excluded for the name of the now canonical Archbishopric of Ohrid.
