Holy Synod of Church of Greece convenes a week after Epiphany
Μembers of the permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece convened today, amid a spate of recent fake news incidents attempting to tarnish Church.
Among others, images of past years’ Epiphany services were circulated over the Internet in a blasphemous attempt to create the impression of mass violations of pandemic-related restrictions on public assembly last week.
The Holy Synod’s spokesman, Metropolitan Athinagoras, also said Tuesday’s session focused on a handful of fines issued by Greek authorities in relation to Epiphany services held in some metropolises.
As previously reported, the permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, under the chairmanship of Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, had decided that this year’s Feast of the Theophany, or Epiphany, along with the Sanctification of the Waters ceremony, was to be exclusively held inside cathedrals and chapels, and without the traditional litanies, processions and blessing ceremonies outdoors, at bodies of water.
In a related development, Archbishop Ieronymos later viewed, along with hierarchs, the Church’s first promotional short film for this year’s bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence.
