Issue of non-canonical one-time Archbishopric of Ohrid under consideration

The issue of the schismatic Orthodox Church in the newly renamed Republic of North Macedonia, known for centuries as the Archbishopric of Ohrid, re-emerged on the forefront this week — with the Ecumenical Patriarchate referring to a standing appeal by the latter.

The Church of Constantinople said the appeal is under examination.

In a related development, the Belgrade daily Politika this week said members of the Serbian Orthodox Church’s assembly of bishops decided to renew negotiations to resolve the status of the former Church, as well as to continue discussions with its representatives. The latter Church broke away from the Serbian Church in 1967 by unilaterally declaring autocephaly.
