Joyous celebrations by Greek Orthodox communities in ancient land of Egypt

The Greek Orthodox communities of Egypt on Thursday commemorated the March 25 twin celebrations – the Annunciation of the Theotokos and the bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence – in a reverent and festive manner.

Orthodox faithful chanted the “Ypermacho Stratigo” (the Invincible Champion) in cathedrals in Cairo and Alexandria, while bells of the Holy Cathedral of Sts. Constantine and Helen of Cairo rang out joyously 200 times – in honor of the 200 years since the struggle for liberation and the creation of the modern Greek state commenced.
