Metropolitan of Corfu Nekarios remains ‘hostage’ to legal proceedings after prosecutor’s appeal, yet another delay
The Metropolitan of Corfu, Paxous and the Diapontian Islands, His Eminence Nektarios, continues to face legal proceedings for allegedly violating state-imposed measures to combat the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
Metropolitan Nektarios was fully acquitted by a first instance court on the island, yet the state’s prosecutor filed an appeal, something possible under Greek law, against the acquittal.
Instead of hearing the prosecutor’s appeal, however, the case was again postponed on Thursday, following a request by the prosecution, to April 2023. The continuing legal case, despite an acquittal, along with a second postponement was sharply criticized by His Eminence’s attorneys, who charged that the hierarch is being kept “hostage” in a legal quagmire.
