Metropolitan of Karpenisi offers free homes to large families willing to move to sparsely populated, mountainous prefecture of Evritania
The Metropolitan of Karpenisi, His Eminence Georgios, this week called on large families to return to the region from urban areas, reversing decades of demographic decline and depopulation in mountainous Evritania prefecture, in central mainland Greece, where Karpenisi is the prefecture capital.
In an interview with the online Pemptousia radio station, His Eminence stressed how important it was to local societies in the provinces for young people to return, thus reversing an image of a “society of elderly people”.
The Metropolis of Karpenisi two years ago duplicated a similar initiative by reposed in the Lord Metropolitan of Siatista Pavlos, whereby suitable residences were located and made available to large families living in urban areas, and with the Metropolis committed to assisting those families.
Nevertheless, the Metropolitan added that the initiative has not attracted recipients so far, whereby he is reiterating his call, “the proposal is still on the table, and we’d like you to convey this message. We are referring to a free residence.”
