Monastery saved from wildfire on Cyprus
Fire-fighters on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus managed to save the small monastery of the Resurrection of the Savior from a major wildfire, which erupted near the Pachna site, in the island’s Limassol district.
In statements to local media a day after the blaze, Fr. Georgios, one of the monastery’s monks, thanked fire-fighters and referred to a miracle, as the monastery was untouched, while the surrounding area was scorched.
In a related development in Greece, a monastery in north-central Evia island, the Monastery of the Panaghia Makrymallis, was evacuated on Tuesday due to a raging wildfire in the region, which also caused the evacuation of a handful of villages and a massive fire-fighting operation.
Τhe monastery is well-known for hosting the Holy Relic of the head of St. Parthenios the Wonder-worker, the Bishop of Lampsakos, as well as the relics of other saints.
