Mt. Athos monasteries hold vigils, litanies for deliverance from coronavirus pandemic
Monasteries on the semi-autonomous community of Mt Athos continue to hold litanies and vigils for deliverance from the coronavirus pandemic.
An all-night prayer will be held on Friday, from the evening and extending into the early hours of Saturday, at all of Mt. Athos’ monasteries and their dependencies. Litanies of Holy Relics and miracle-working icons will also be held by each monastery, in supplication against the pandemic.
In a statement, the representatives and abbots of the 20 Holy Monasteries on Mt. Athos expressed their love to their sorely tested fellow man, praying for the intercession of the Theotokos, the All-Holy Virgin Mary, to comfort and console humanity, and to aid medical professionals and volunteers in their struggle to cure and attend to those afflicted.
At the same time, the letter by the Holy Monasteries of Mt. Athos expresses the grief of the Athonite brotherhoods over any blanket suspension of Orthodox Christian liturgies and worship, especially during a period of a pandemic.
