New Serbian Patriarch Porfirije arrives at historic Patriarchate of Pec in Kosovo & Metohija

The newly enthroned Patriarch of Serbia, His Holiness Porfirije, on Monday, the first day of Great Lent, began a three-day period of strict fast from all foods and drink at the historic Serbian monastery of the Patriarchate of Pec, in Kosovo and Metohija.

His Holiness arrived on Sunday at the monastery, where he supplicated the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Pec, and the holy relics of his predecessors, the Serbian nation’s Archbishops and Patriarchs.

The Pec monastery is a Stauropegic monastery and is under the direct jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Serbia.

The Patriarchate of Pec is the historical name for the Serbian Orthodox Church and had its seat in the town, during the periods 1346-1463 and 1557-1766.

By tradition, the monastery hosts the official enthronement of the Serbian Church’s patriarchs.
