Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly Mati wildfire, which erased the coastal east Attica prefecture settlement off the map. The wildfire resulted in the death of 102 people, including many children.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday morning at the Dormition of the Virgin Cathedral in the area, which was attended, among others, by new Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In the immediate wake of the tragedy, the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece provided all types of assistance and support to the families of the victims, and to survivors of the wildfire.

Donations in support of relief efforts, beginning on the first Sunday after the disaster, on July 29, 2018, were collected at parishes around mainland Greece – with the initial sum raised reaching 336,000 euros, along with 300,000 euros donated by the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Features today on the Orthodoxia news agency’s web-pages focus on the disaster.
