Orthodoxia news agency from the site of deadly train collision; 3-day period of mourning declared

A deadly train collision in north-central Greece late Tuesday night that left more than 36 people dead and dozens injured has shocked the nation. Appalling scenes from the site of the tragedy were grimly recorded by Orthodoxia news agency (ope.gr) in the subsequent hours.

Some 350 passengers were aboard a Hellenic Rail train headed from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki when it collided, head-on, with a freight train headed south, at roughly 11.20 p.m. local time (21.20 GMT).

Greece was declared in a three-day period of mourning hours later, after a decision by PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with all public events, commemorations and sporting events cancelled.

Ope.gr correspondent Eleni Gennitseftsi and photographer Rafael Georgiadis were among the first media professionals on the scene of the terrible accident, considered the worst in Greece’s rail history.
