The Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Divine Beatitude Theodoros II, celebrated his name day in the far-off southern Africa country of Malawi, and surrounded by the children of the Orthodox parish of St. Catherine, or St. Ekaterini in Greek. The parish is located in one of the most destitute and polluted sites in the country, in the N-dir-ande slum, outside the town of Blantyre.

His Divine Beatitude Theodoros was accompanied by the Metropolitan of Axum, His Eminence Daniel, and the local Orthodox Bishop of Malawi, His Grace Fotios, for the dedication of the new cathedral.

The specific slum is located next to a massive landfill, where garbage from the wider area is collected, leading to constant outbreaks of diseases and epidemics, with children the most affected.
