Patriarch of Serbia Porfirije at Jasenovac death camp: Those murdered here were innocent; each innocent victim indeed a martyr
The Patriarch of Serbia, His Holiness Porfirije, on Monday arrived at the historic Monastery of St. John the Baptist at Jasenovac, located some 90 kilometers southeast of the capital of Croatia, Zagreb, for an event honoring the martyrdom of people killed at a WWII concentration camp there.
The death camp was operated in the area between 1941 and 1945 Nazi-allied Ustasha regime.
In his solemn statements, His Holiness noted that the people murdered at Jasenovac were innocent, and each innocent victim is indeed a martyr, something that transcends ethnicity – even though their ethnic background is well known.
Patriarch Porfirije said the faithful of the Serbian Orthodox Church have never assembled at Jasenovac to compare those victims with victims of other conflicts, but to remember them and pray that such a crime against humanity is never repeated.
