Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria visits Panama, focusing on Interfaith Dialogue and the Mission of Orthodoxy
His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa, arrived in Panama City late on Monday, 26 January 2026, where he received a warm official and ecclesiastical welcome from Church leaders, government representatives, diplomats, and members of the Greek community.
On Tuesday, an official Doxology was celebrated at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos. His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Mexico welcomed the Patriarch, emphasising the historic ties linking Panama, Greece, and Egypt, as well as the close relationship between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Patriarchate of Alexandria. In his response, Patriarch Theodoros II spoke of his long-standing friendship with His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, recent historic meetings of Orthodox Primates, and the Patriarchate’s commitment to keeping the light of Orthodoxy alive throughout Africa.
During his stay, the Patriarch met with the Greek community, visited the Greek School, the Greek Embassy, and attended official receptions hosted by diplomatic representatives. He also met with religious leaders of Panama, praising their efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Concluding his visit, Patriarch Theodoros addressed issues facing Africa, particularly migration, modern forms of exploitation, and human suffering, calling for greater solidarity and protection of human dignity. His visit culminated with a televised interview on the national channel Telemetro, bringing his message of faith, peace, and compassion to the wider Panamanian public.
