Patriarchal Horostasia at the Church of Saint George of the Darülaceze Poorhouse
His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided on Bright Wednesday, 15 April, at the Divine Liturgy celebrated at the Church of Saint George, located within the grounds of the historic Darülaceze Poorhouse, built during the Ottoman Empire period.
The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the Grand Syncellus Fr. Ieronymos and the Third Patriarchal Deacon Fr. Epiphanios.
Among those present were His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph of Proikonnisos and His Eminence Metropolitan Stephanos of Kallioupolis and Madytos, Supervisor of the Tatavla district, clergy of the Most Holy Archdiocese of Constantinople, and faithful from Constantinople.
In his homily, His All-Holiness conveyed his Paschal greetings to the congregation and referred to the history of this Orthodox chapel, which was built at the end of the 19th century when the Poorhouse began operating, to serve its Christian residents. On the same premises, at the initiative of the then Sultan, a synagogue and a mosque were also constructed to meet the religious needs of the residents.
His All-Holiness expressed his gratitude to Metropolitan Stephanos of Kallioupolis and Madytos for overseeing the celebration of the sacred services there, as well as to the administration of the historic institution for all the assistance provided and for their expressed willingness to support the renovation and restoration of this institutional church.
Immediately afterwards, His All-Holiness had a cordial meeting with the President of the Institution, Ms Esra Ceceli İslam, who had earlier welcomed him at the entrance of the church and accompanied him to her office.
