The state’s persecution against the Orthodox Church in Montenegro continues unabated. The latest instance of harassment involves the Bishop of Niksic, His Grace Ioannicus, who along with another seven Orthodox clerics, was detained by police in Montenegro this week after a litany on the feast day of St. Basil of Ostrog.

The outdoor litany was led by the Metropolitan-Bishop of Montenegro and the Littoral, His Eminence Amphilochios, and attended by hundreds of faithful.

According to an announcement by the Metropolitinate, the objective of police in the small Adriatic country was to humiliate the Orthodox Bishop, with authorities first attempting to violently drag the hierarch to a police station, instead of allowing him to voluntarily appear the next day. Dozens of people protested the outside the police precinct, singing hymns and demanding an end to the state persecution of Orthodoxy in Montenegro.
