Perth: Sunday before the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ

On Sunday the 18th of December, the Sunday before the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyanea Officiated at the Matins and presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Church of Sts Constantine and Helene in Perth WA.

In his sermon, His Grace highlighted for the faithful the many Old Testament figures presented in the genealogy of Jesus Christ as detailed in the opening chapter of the Gospel according to St Matthew. In particular, His Grace discussed the way in which many of those Old Testament figures were not necessarily all holy people but more importantly they were normal, sinful human beings just like us.

His Grace stated, “We find sinners of all kinds and we find people who even when blessed by God, fell in times of weakness such as King David. It was from this family tree that the holiest person to walk the earth came from. Jesus Christ, the only Sinless One, was a descendent of sinful humanity. And what does this teach us? That He has great compassion for sinners who are part of His own family”.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, His Grace Bishop Elpidios wished Parish Priest, Fr Terry Gerovasilis, a very happy and blessed Name Day (which was celebrated during the previous week on Thursday the 15th of December – the feast of the Hieromartyr Saint Eleftherios). His Grace thanked Fr Terry for his dedication to the Church, his parishioners and the Archdiocese and presented him with a stole (epitrachelion).

Finally, on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, His Grace Bishop Elpidios wished all the faithful of the Parish, and in particular the President of the Hellenic Community of WA, Mr. Paul Afkos, a blessed and salvific feast of the Nativity.
