Register of destroyed, damaged churches in Russia

The Russian Orthodox Church this week announced that 3,245 churches and chapels in Russia are considered as severely damaged or destroyed. A register of those churches was compiled by information supplied by the 110 Orthodox metropolises in the vast country.

The head of the national cultural heritage register expressed her sadness over the thousands of destroyed churches, adding that even those that are in good condition remain closed and are threatened by a lack of maintenance and vandalism.

One initiative being considered is for abandoned churches to open a few times a year for services, such as on the great feasts of Christmas and Holy Easter.
