Remaining Christians in war-ravaged Syria face latest ominous threat, this time from Erdogan
Thousands of Christians in war-torn Syria continue to persevere in the face of extreme threats from jihadi insurgents in the country, while the latest specter to emerge is none other than Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The increasingly authoritarian Turkish leader threatened to launch a third invasion of northern Syria, rekindling fears by the remaining Christians and non-Sunni Muslims in the area that the Turkish military will complete the annihilation of the ancient Christian communities, something begun by the ISIS terrorists.
The Washington Post this week reported that tens of thousands of Turkish troops have amassed on the border for a military operation east of the Euphrates, ostensibly aimed at what Ankara claims are Kurdish forces operating in northern Syria. Some 100,000 Christians are estimated as remaining the threatened region.
The Turkish armed forces and their proxies already occupy territory in extreme northern Syria, mainly in the Afrin, al-Bab and Jarabulus districts.
