Romanian Church initiatives for relief of human trafficking victims

The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons was observed yesterday, on Thursday. The observance is a United Nations initiative that aims to sensitize public opinion and to combat the modern-day scourge of human trafficking.

Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims.

According to a report by the European Commission, which was cited by the Romanian ecclesiastical news agency Basilica, most of the victims in eastern Europe hail from Romania, with children a quarter of the victims, and females comprising nearly two out of three people trafficked.

On its part, the Romania Orthodox Church has been on the forefront of efforts to combat human trafficking, such as creating shelters.
