Russian Church wishes Depardieu to stop on Orthodoxy in his spiritual search
The Moscow Patriarchate welcomes the choice of French actor Gerard Depardieu, who adopted Orthodoxy at a Russian church in Paris.
Earlier, Depardieu had adopted Islam, Buddhism, and after converting in Orthodoxy he said that now for completeness he has to adopt Judaism.
Head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk wished the actor that Orthodoxy would become his final choice. «If a long way of religious search preceded this choice, I am glad that this way is over in Orthodoxy,» he said on air Church and the World program on Rossiya-24 TV-channel.
According to the hierarch, Orthodoxy is a tradition that allows anyone to realize spiritual and moral potential and is «a treasury where you can draw upon all your life.»
The metropolitan called Depardieu one of the greatest actors of the 20th century and mentioned one of his roles – the role of Colonel Chabert in film version of Balzac’s novel. «I admire the depth Gerard Depardieu showed when he played the role. And I wish that he will approach to Orthodox faith with the same depth and earnestness and the Orthodox faith will manifest him all its dimensions the way it opens before a sincere believer,» the Russian Orthodox hierarch said.
