Second, final leg of Greek constitutional revision process begins

Members of the committee, selected from all political party formations represented in Greece’s 300-deputy legislature, are tasked with processing constitutional revision proposals passed by the previous Parliament plenum, before submitting the proposals for a final vote by the current plenum.

Among the articles eligible for revision is Article 3 of the Greek constitution, which defines the overall framework for Church-state relations.

The previous leftist government had signaled its intent to revise the specific article in favor of declaring the Greek state’s neutrality regarding religion, a prospect sternly opposed by the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece, the dominant faith of Greek citizens and the religion intertwined with the history and identity of the modern Greek state.

Conversely, the center-right government now in power since July 2019, and backed by a majority of deputies in parliament, has indicated that it will not amend or revise the specific article.

According to a timetable announced by the majority in Parliament, the constitutional revision process should be concluded by the end of the year.
